Digital Eye Strain

What is Digital Eye Strain?

Now that we live in the “Digital Era”, screen time is unavoidable for most. We are constantly exposed to a large amount of harmful blue light emitted by our electronics. Computer monitors, laptops, tablets, smart phones, LED TVs – even compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs emit blue light. Digital Eye Strain arises from daily over-exposure to blue light, leading to the symptoms listed below.

Symptoms

  • Eye strain
  • Headaches
  • Trouble sleeping/ Insomnia
  • Fatigue

Effects on Children

Children tend to hold devices closer and their larger pupils let in more blue light compared to adults. This puts them at a higher risk for developing sleep disorders, behavioural problems (such as ADHD), and vision loss. Since the reliance on electronics is increasing in younger generations, regular eye exams are highly recommended to track the health of the eyes and assess if there is any damage done by excessive electronic usage.

Solution & Preventative Actions:

It is imperative to protect your eyes against harmful blue light now to ensure long-term health of the eyes. Here at Queenston Eye Care, we offer a clear blue light filter coating on our lenses to drastically decrease or even eliminate the symptoms of blue light pollution.

BluTech Lenses filter blue light via a combination of dyes and pigments, which no other clear lens can do. These lenses are clinically proven to improve contrast, clarity, comfort, night vision, and even improve the quality of your sleep.

This technology can be added to any of our single vision, progressive or polarized sunglass lenses you choose to purchase here at Queenston Eye Care.

What can I do?

Investing in blue light cancelling coatings on your lenses will filter out the harmful light by a significant amount to decrease symptoms. However, reducing daily exposure to electronics and remembering to take frequent breaks from the computer/phone screens will also help improve any symptoms caused by harmful blue light.
